AI in the fields: how artificial intelligence is quietly changing life for India’s farmers

Away from the hype around chatbots, artificial intelligence is doing something profound in India, helping hundreds of millions of farmers grow more food with less risk. I explain in simple terms how AI advisory apps, satellites and a new government tool are reshaping the fields.

I usually explain how artificial intelligence is changing our lives in simple language, and while most attention goes to chatbots and flashy apps, I believe the most profound change AI is bringing to India is happening quietly and far from the cities, out in the fields where hundreds of millions of farmers earn their living.

Agriculture is not a small story in India, it is the backbone of the country and the livelihood of a huge share of our population, so when a technology genuinely helps a farmer grow more food with less risk, it touches far more lives than any productivity app ever could, and that is exactly what AI is starting to do.

What AI actually does on a farm

In plain terms, AI on a farm works like a tireless expert advisor, using machine learning, computer vision and predictive analytics to help with everything from planning which crop to sow, to timing irrigation, controlling pests and forecasting the likely yield, all based on real data rather than guesswork.

A big part of the magic comes from the sky, because satellite imagery now provides unbiased, real time information about crop health, soil condition and moisture levels across huge areas, and AI algorithms crunch all of that to turn a confusing flood of numbers into simple, actionable advice a farmer can actually use.

This is not a distant experiment either, since a whole ecosystem of Indian tools already exists, with names like Farmonaut, CropIn, Fasal, Gramophone and AgroStar, each tuned for different regions and crops, alongside pioneering efforts such as the Microsoft AI Sowing App that advises farmers on the best time to plant.

The numbers behind this shift are encouraging, because AI adoption in Indian agriculture is predicted to increase returns by up to thirty percent in 2026, especially through geospatial intelligence and solutions that help farmers use precious resources like water and fertiliser far more efficiently than before.

What moves me most, though, is how AI is tearing down an old barrier, because for generations, language and a lack of formal education kept timely farming advice out of reach for many, and now AI chatbots and voice based assistants available in multiple regional languages are finally bridging that gap.

Imagine a farmer who cannot read English simply speaking a question in his own language into a phone and getting clear guidance in return, and you start to see why this matters so much, because it puts world class agricultural knowledge into the hands of the people who need it the most.

The government joins in

The state is now backing this movement in a big way, as the Union Budget for 2026 and 2027 proposed a tool called Bharat VISTAAR, a multilingual AI system designed to integrate the country’s AgriStack digital platforms with the trusted agricultural research of ICAR into one intelligent advisory service for farmers.

The goal of this ambitious project is exactly what you would hope for, to increase farm productivity, help farmers make better decisions and reduce their risk by offering customised support, effectively giving every farmer access to a personalised expert that understands both cutting edge data and local realities.

So while the world debates whether AI will replace office jobs, I find myself far more excited by this quieter revolution in the soil, because if we get it right, artificial intelligence could help make Indian farming more resilient, more profitable and more dignified, and that, to me, is technology changing life in the best possible way.
